Pathway

Switzerland — Work (Postdoc and academic researcher)

For PhD holders: a postdoc at a Swiss university is outside the quota if it starts within two years of the doctorate, and the contract replaces proof of funds. ETH/EPFL security screening for Iranians still applies.

Steps on this pathway

  2. 2Finding a position

Requirements

Main requirements

This route is for PhD holders taking a postdoc or research post at a Swiss university or research institute. Positions are advertised by the institution or hired directly by a professor. Per the federal SEM directives, postdocs are admitted outside the quotas under Art. 40 OASA if they work at a university or higher-education institution covered by the HEdA (cantonal universities, ETH and EPFL, universities of applied sciences, etc.) and the postdoc stay starts no later than two years after the doctorate. SEM caps this status at 8 years from the doctorate (including doctoral time in Switzerland), with a shorter 4-year cap in some cases; ask the university's HR office for your exact limit. Per EPFL's document, if more than two years have passed since your PhD you count as a scientific collaborator under the L quota; employers outside these institutions follow the normal quota rules.

ETH also applies security screening to employment and scientific guests from sanctioned countries, using the same criteria: prior study at a sanctioned institution, nationality or residence, funding source and dual-use research area.

Documents

Tehran embassy work/research checklist (July 2026): three D forms, four photos, original passport, employment contract from the university, shenasnameh and degree translations legalised by the Iranian MFA, CV, motivation letter and language certificate.

Language

Most research groups work in English, and the embassy lists a language certificate.

Costs and proof of funds

The contract is your financial proof; no separate funds are needed. Out-of-pocket costs cover translations, visa, flight and the first month. Values as per official sources, checked October 2026.

Steps and timeline

After the offer, the university files the permit; ETH says the authorities take 4–6 weeks. Then book the D visa by email with the Tehran embassy; the checklist says the Swiss decision takes 12–16 weeks.

Tips for Iranian applicants

The Tehran embassy closed temporarily on 11 March 2026 and reopened gradually from May 2026; its 3 August 2026 notice says consular services are limited but D visas are accepted by appointment. If your PhD is from a sanctioned institution or in a sensitive technical field, security screening may block you.

After arrival (work while studying, post-study stay, path to permanent residence)

The permit is tied to the contract and the caps above. To stay outside academia, a new employer must obtain a new (usually quota) work permit. A C permit for non-EU nationals normally comes after 10 years of residence and, per SEM directives, needs the local language at oral A2 and written A1; with good integration and oral B1 / written A1 you can apply after 5 uninterrupted years on a B permit. Study years only count under a condition: per SEM, if after finishing your studies you hold a residence permit for a lasting purpose (e.g. work) for two uninterrupted years.

Timeline

Typically 4 – 10 months from start to visa decision, depending on document preparation, language tests and embassy appointments.
